Fantastic post, Ed. This is one of the problems that has plagued the soaps. Ever since the "college campus" soap opera boom of the early 1980s, these shows have focused almost exclusvely on young adult females. So, even though these shows had respectable numbers among older audiences, etc., they considered them at times a hindrance rather than a benefit and concentrated all efforts on "upping the demo." That didn't work, and if anything they just ran off the viewers they did have along the way.

Part of the problem is that ABC helped popularize this argument in the early 1970s. They were Network #3, but they had the Boomers. They argued that CBS's top numbers were of older audiences from the Depression Era who liked the rural comedies, Red Skelton, Ed Sullivan, and so forth.

That argument held some merit 40 years ago. But, today, the AARP-aged audience IS the boomer audience, and many people with the Depression mindset are no longer with us. So this argument that advertisers should only care about young women and men is an example of a logic from yesteryear just staying unchallenged.

Great to see this steady shift away, even if it is too late to save many of the soaps that have gone off the air.
